If you like using microscope since your first grade, there are a lot of careers that could open up for you and your hobbies. Microscope enthusiasts are strongly advised to take a course or a career path that would make the most use of their skills and talents, especially for those who enjoy looking at samples under the microscope.

One of such careers is that of a microbiologist. A microbiologist is a professional or a scientist whose job is to investigate microorganisms. They scrutinize cellular samples that can’t be seen by the naked eye. As such, they have to use high power microscopes in order to be fully accurate with their samples.

A microbiologist is known by many titles. But primarily, their job is to study all living organisms, more particularly the infectious agents. Only a microscope can view these samples. Therefore, a microbiologist’s most essential tool is his microscope. He can never do his job without it.

Microbiologists also study the interaction of cells, tissues, and other microorganisms with each other. They also determine their uses and effects on people and the environment. Microbes are everywhere. They exist in almost all things in this world. And they do affect people’s lives. This is the main reason why the role of microbiologists in the society and to humankind is intense.

To become a microbiologist, you have to finish a course of study. The main interest of their course is biology. You can called a microbiologist if you hold a Bachelor of Science or a Doctoral certificate in microbiology. There are many areas of specialty a microbiologist can focus on. As such, they are called by many names.

A microbiologist who specializes in the study of bacteria and their effects in humans, animals, and plants are called bacteriologists. They study bacteria, it forms, structures, and their behavior. It is also their job to ensure that these bacteria are stopped in their tracks, especially if they are harmful. They are also expected to aid in the proliferation of the bacteria if they are helpful to the body. Bacteriologists are tasked to discover new bacteria.  Or if they can, they could produce new, helpful bacteria to aid in human digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune system strengthening.

Environmental microbiology is yet another specialization. These microbiologists work closely with the environment in order to study all the relevant roles and effects of bacteria to it. If bacteriologists specialize on the effects of bacteria in living things, environmental biologists are more concerned about their effects in the environment.

Food microbiologists study the same thing. But their field of specialization is in foods. These experts work for the food industries all around the world. They study how pathogenic microorganisms could possible cause spoilage and food borne illnesses. Microorganisms could possibly cause diseases and health issues. And if they come from the food the person eats, it is the task of a food microbiologist to study all its implications.

There are also industrial microbiologists practicing today. Their study of bacteria is more on the helpful side. They want to discover which bacteria could be helpful in the production of a certain tool, device, or technology. Industrial microbiologist works for biotechnology and aims to discover the productive uses of bacteria.

Of all the types of microbiologists, medical microbiologists must be the most popular of all. Medical biologists are also doctors. They are medical practitioners that are specializing in diagnosing and treating diseases that are caused by microbes. They prescribe medicines and study the patient’s condition in order to treat them of their disease.

There are also mycologists, protozoologists, virologists, and microbial epidemiologists working in different industries. All of them are microbiologists with a certain specialization. Mycologists are the experts in the study of fungi. Protozoologists, on the other hand, are the experts when it comes to protists. Virologists are the ones who study viruses, their structure, behavior, and harmful effects. Microbial epidemiologists are more concerned about microorganisms and their role in the sickness or the health of a person.

These are the different fields or areas of expertise of microbiologists. If you want to be one, brace yourself for some in-depth study of that small organism called microbe. These microbes could either be an enemy or a friend, depending as to which field you are in and how you perceive them. Either the case, you will be helping the society more in combating microbes if they have no use for the environment or the humankind, or to propagate them, if their role is essential in the growth and development of human lives.
